Viewing sub-pages

It looks like I can’t view any of my nested pages using this theme. Perhaps I need to have the Pages widget available for sub-page  navigation.

Yep, appears no wordpress.com themes will give me sub-page nav tabs…stuck with the site-mappish Pages widget for visual organization by users

Gravatar image not displaying

So setting up your Gravatar preferences , then adding the Gravatar widget to a sidebar isn’t quite enough to get it to work…

If the image doesn’t display, you may need to view the Gravatar widget options

Once you expand those options,  see the User name menu, and select the user containing your graphic

So far so good…

Not too bad! I got a theme applied, tied in my twitter feed, and added an About page via my Theme. Just waiting for my Gravatar image to update & I’m done for the moment.

Notes to self:
Adding widgets is good…adding settings to the widgets is also necessary!
It looks like I can add lots of html to the free hosting, I just have to do it thru unemphasized links on the wordpress site

Apparently there’s some surf out there & I’m due for a lunch break!

SM v. SEO v. Blogging v. microblogging

So…

social media allows myself and my friends, clients, and colleagues to weigh in on what we’re all doing, as well as comment on the wisdom or lack thereof of those activities

seach engine optimization allows people to find the content that we all create, allowing monetization of our content

blogging, aside from the journaling aspect  (I hope) will allow me to organize and refer to back to solutions and content I and others have found useful. With any luck, I’ll see the need for self-hosting of this and other blogs in time.

microblogging (twitter) will allow for quick distribution of info, and links to more permanent content.

Here’s my first post…one that I thought I’d make about an hour ago, until I made a mistake when signing up for the username mattrsullivan.

I tried to be cautious and simply start with reserving a username, so I chose the “Just a User Name” option when signing up this morning!

The wrong option for free blogging

Feeling all warm & fuzzy, I soon realized that I wasn’t ready to self-host since I really wanted to just get used to the concept and am not yet ready to monetize & take advantage of the SEO and other perks that come with self-hosting.

Though a million links on Google exist to migrate from WP.com to WP.org, I couldn’t find anything about how to change a reserved wordpress username back into a wordpress.com free hosting account!

Well, at least I got the username registered for when self-hosting makes sense.

If anyone knows how to migrate an account back to wordpress.com, please post so others can adjust accounts instead of registering new ones!

Use really simplified words, as those finding this link via search will have (as I did) very little experience with the wordpress.com interface!
